Peter Drucker famously stated in the Harvard Business Review in 1989: “Nonprofits need management even more than business does, precisely because they lack the discipline of the bottom line.” Much less famously, as Director of the UCSD PACE Program, for years I presided over a real-world demonstration of the ghastly truth of these words. Then I got smart and got help. When we first consulted with Adams & Adams, our program was at a critical juncture. We were overwhelmed by our own success! We had dedicated employees and a superb vision, but we did not have the infrastructure or skill to get to the next step of organizational development and build on our success.
